So.. with so many brushes out there, I wanted to follow up from my last post – the different areas of the eye – and talk a little about what brushes go where and what ones I feel are totally essential!
The brushes you will see are all ones I have chosen from MAC. However, I am not saying that this is the only brand you should purchase from – Sigma Online, Blank Canvas Cosmetics and Crown Brush Uk.. are all brands that I would recommend also
So for the Lid as outlined in my previous post – this is generally where your base colour will go. Anything from White, Gold, Pink, Copper… whatever you choose! The brush which is best for this is the most simple of them all – a Flat Headed Brush to pack on the pigment.
What you see above is the 239 from MAC.
We then move onto the Crease. Again this is generally where you will place your darkest shade to create your ‘smokey eye’. This colour creates depth and gives the illusion that the eye is more hollow and therefore needs to be blended beautifully. Blending is the secret to any smokey eye and is all in the brush.
I have chosen MAC’s 217 for this. Possibly their best-selling eye brush – I don’t how many of these I sold when I worked on the Grafton St counter! Its an amazing brush and will definitely make your application ten times easier – trust me!
If you’re new to the whole concept of a smokey eye and are little intimidated by the crease colour and the darkness of it, a nice tip is to sketch out where you’re going to put the darker shadow with a small pencil brush first as shown below;
This 219 is great for sketching out your colour before you blend with the 217 but also to shade any colour on the lower lash line also – I think you’ll find you’ll use this a lot!
So then you will generally find you will have that gap between your crease and your brow highlight - the brow bone. Any flat brush is great to get your brow highlight directly underneath your brow. To save yourselves money just double up on the 239 above and use that for this area too!
Anyway, back to that gap – this is what is known as the brow bone. The brow bone can’t be left unattended or else your shadows won’t be blended like they should be and you won’t get that flawless finish!
I fell in love with the 224 and I use this everyday to buff on one shadow and thats my daily eye makeup – nothing too heavy or time consuming! This brush has a lot of flexibility in it and therefore blends the colour really well. You will also notice I used the term ‘boring browns’ I will talk further into these on a different post but basically these are the shades that don’t exactly catch your attention but are that essential finishing touch to your eye to blend it all together. This brush closes the gap between your crease shade and brow highlight beautifully and effortlessly.
The last brush I am going to talk about which doesn’t necessarily correspond to any area I outlined on my previous post is the Angle Brush. Absolutely every makeup bag should have one of these brushes whether its to get that perfect finish on your brows or to apply that statement flick gel liner. Investing in a sturdy angle brush not only will make your life much easier but you will much sharper finishes also!
So like I said this is just relating to the ‘Traditional’ way of a smokey eye and are some suggestions of the brushes I couldn’t live without! If you’re interested in seeing the options from different brands, leave me a comment and I will do that for you.
